COMO Shambhala Wellness in Bhutan: Your Complete Guide to Spa, Yoga & Hot Stone Baths

A deep dive into the COMO Shambhala wellness experience at both COMO Uma Paro and COMO Uma Punakha — from Ayurvedic treatments and yoga with valley views to the ancient Bhutanese hot stone bath ritual.

TLDR

COMO Shambhala at Paro offers a full retreat: 4 treatment rooms, indoor pool, gym, yoga studio, in-villa spa suites, and bespoke wellness programmes. Punakha focuses on intimacy with 2 treatment rooms and a hillside hot stone bathhouse. Both feature traditional Bhutanese hot stone baths, daily yoga, and COMO Shambhala Kitchen nutrition-optimised cuisine. Operating hours 9am-9pm at Paro, 12pm-9pm at Punakha.

What Is COMO Shambhala?

"Shambhala" means peace in Sanskrit, and the COMO Shambhala approach to wellness pursues exactly that — a balance of mind, body, and spirit through treatments that combine modern science with ancient Asian healing practices. In Bhutan, this philosophy finds its most natural home: a kingdom that measures its success by Gross National Happiness rather than GDP, where Buddhism permeates daily life, and where the landscape itself seems to invite stillness.

Both COMO Uma properties in Bhutan — Paro and Punakha — house COMO Shambhala wellness facilities, though they differ significantly in scale and character. This guide covers both in detail.

COMO Shambhala at COMO Uma Paro

The Paro retreat is the more comprehensive of the two — a full-service wellness centre designed for guests who want to make wellness a central part of their Bhutan journey rather than an occasional add-on.

Facilities

  • Four treatment rooms for massages, facials, body therapies, and Ayurvedic treatments
  • Two private Bhutanese hot stone bathhouses — the signature wellness experience
  • Heated indoor pool with an outdoor alfresco sundeck overlooking the valley
  • Fully equipped fitness centre with cardio and strength-training equipment
  • Yoga studio with floor-to-ceiling views of the Paro Valley
  • Steam rooms for men and women
  • In-villa treatment suites in all nine private villas for complete seclusion

Operating hours: 9:00am to 9:00pm daily.

Signature Treatment: Bhutanese Hot Stone Bath

The Bhutanese hot stone bath is unlike anything in the Western spa tradition. River stones are heated over an open fire until they crack and steam, then lowered into a wooden tub of water. As the stones fracture, they release key minerals that are believed to relieve deep-set aches, ease joint pain, and soothe the nervous system. The water turns milky and warm, enveloping you in a gentle, mineral-rich embrace.

At COMO Uma Paro, this experience takes place in one of two private bathhouses and concludes with a signature COMO Shambhala massage — the combination of heat, minerals, and skilled hands is deeply therapeutic.

Bespoke Wellness Programmes

For guests staying three nights or longer, COMO Uma Paro offers structured wellness programmes designed around specific outcomes:

  • Detox: Cleansing treatments, clean-eating menus from COMO Shambhala Kitchen, and guided hikes to stimulate circulation
  • Revitalize: Energy-restoring therapies, yoga, meditation, and nutritionally dense meals to combat fatigue
  • Himalayan Rejuvenation: The most comprehensive option, blending Bhutanese healing rituals with COMO Shambhala's global repertoire — hot stone baths, herbal compresses, Ayurvedic consultations, and altitude-adapted fitness

Daily Yoga

Complimentary group yoga classes run daily (except Sundays) in the dedicated studio overlooking the Paro Valley. Private sessions can be arranged for guests who prefer individual instruction or specific practices — Hatha, Vinyasa, restorative, or meditation-focused.

COMO Shambhala at COMO Uma Punakha

The Punakha wellness offering is deliberately more intimate, reflecting the lodge's scale (11 rooms) and its emphasis on simplicity and nature connection.

Facilities

  • Two treatment rooms (one double, one single)
  • Hillside hot stone bathhouse — perched above the lodge with views over the valley and the Mo Chhu River below

Operating hours: 12:00pm to 9:00pm daily. Treatments are also available to non-guests.

The Hillside Hot Stone Bath

The hot stone bath at Punakha deserves special mention. The bathhouse sits on the hillside above the lodge, open to the valley air. Unlike the enclosed bathhouses at Paro, this one connects you directly to the landscape — the sound of the Mo Chhu river below, the forested hills across the valley, the gradual cooling of the evening air as the stones release their heat. It is simpler, more elemental, and many guests tell us it is the single most memorable wellness experience of their Bhutan trip.

COMO Shambhala Kitchen

Both properties feature COMO Shambhala Kitchen menus alongside their standard Bukhari restaurant offerings. These nutritionally optimised dishes use pure, locally sourced ingredients in nourishing combinations — designed to support wellness objectives without sacrificing flavour. Seasonal highlights at Paro include wild mushrooms, buckwheat, and pumpkin; at Punakha, subtropical fruits and valley-grown vegetables take centre stage.

For those who want wellness woven into a broader cultural itinerary, the Historical Odysseys six-night journey includes a complimentary spa treatment and daily yoga alongside full-day guided excursions.

As COMO's Preferred Partner, Bhutan & Co. can arrange bespoke wellness-focused stays at either or both properties. Browse our COMO journeys or contact our concierge to design your programme.
